Cal Poly's REMUS system underwent extensive enhancements adding GPS positioning, side scan sonar acoustic imaging, and Iridium satellite communications capabilities. The system is also equipped with special optical sensors enabling the system to be used in Dr. Moline’s research on harmful algal blooms and ground truthing hyperspectral remote sensing data. The enhancements incorporated into the system will enable Dr. Moline to communicate with the REMUS system over the horizon, many miles from his shore based research laboratory. A second REMUS system is also at Hydroid undergoing similar upgrades for studying the dynamics of near shore bioluminescent communities.
