Continual International Expansion Encourages Navy to Enlist Fleet of REMUS (Remote Environmental Measuring Units) Systems
Pocasset, MA – September 2007 – Hydroid, LLC, a leading manufacturer of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), announced today that through its representative EIVA A/S it is supplying Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace two REMUS 100 systems to be delivered by 2009-2010 with an option for a third vehicle. The order for the two Hydroid REMUS 100 AUV systems was awarded as an integral part of the growing mine sweeping unit of the Finnish Defence Force.
The REMUS 100 systems will work in conjunction with three new mine hunting vessels, which are part of a larger Mine Countermeasure (MCM) capability being delivered to the Finnish Navy.
Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace will act as supplier of the Mine Reconnaissance and Hydrographic Suite which are integrated to the tactical system (C2) delivered by Atlas Electronics, Germany. Intermarine, Italy is the shipbuilder and the prime contractor. The REMUS 100 systems, built in Pocasset, MA, are to be delivered by Hydroid in 2009 and 2010, and are configured with a sensor suite specifically intended to meet the Finnish Navy’s requirements for MCM activities.
“These specially outfitted REMUS 100 systems with dual frequency side scan are distinctly suited for Finland’s rugged environment, which is inhospitable to extensive underwater human missions,” said Commander Risto Hellgren of the Finnish Navy. “Hydroid’s AUVs provide us with a significant technical advantage that will bolster our mine countermeasure division and will be invaluable to Finland’s coastal defense.”
“Hydroid is excited that the Finnish Navy has chosen to utilize a fleet of REMUS AUVs to further support its MCM operations,” stated Christopher von Alt, Hydroid’s president and one of its co-founders. “This contract demonstrates Hydroid’s momentum in multi-use AUV applications, and shows the rising trend to utilize AUVs as the key element in advanced coastal defense missions.”
Hydroid's REMUS AUVs can be fitted with a number of different types of sensors and cameras and have been used to aid in hydrographic surveys, harbor security operations, debris field mapping and scientific sampling and mapping. Hydroid’s AUVs are currently being used by many navies around the world, including the U.S. Navy, Royal Navy, Royal Australian Navy, Royal New Zealand Navy, Royal Netherlands Navy and the Belgian Navy.
