Pocasset, MA – August 20, 2007 - Hydroid, LLC, a leading manufacturer of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), announced today that it has been awarded a contract for a modified REMUS (Remote Environmental Measuring Units) 600 system from NOAA. The highly versatile, modular AUV will be used by NOAA to assist in its nautical charting efforts. This is Hydroid’s second contract with NOAA, which has utilized its original REMUS 100 system for similar initiatives since 2003.
NOAA conducts research and gathers data about the global oceans, atmosphere, space and the sun and applies this knowledge to science and services that touch the lives of all Americans. NOAA warns of dangerous weather, charts the seas and skies, guides the use and protection of ocean and coastal resources and conducts research to improve the understanding and stewardship of the environment. As a Commerce Department agency, NOAA provides these services through five major organizations: the National Weather Service, the National Ocean Service, the National Marine Fisheries Service, the National Environmental Satellite, Data and Information Service and NOAA Research.
Hydroid's REMUS AUVs can be fitted with a number of different types of sensors and cameras and have been used to aid in hydrographic surveys, harbor security operations, debris field mapping and scientific sampling and mapping. Hydroid’s AUVs are currently being used by many research facilities around the world, including the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
