Hydroid’s AUVs to Demonstrate Capabilities as Explosive Ordnance Disposal Hull Unmanned Underwater Vehicle Localization System (EOD HULS)
Pocasset, MA – August, 2007 – Hydroid, LLC, a leading manufacturer of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), announced today that it has been awarded a contract from the US Navy to demonstrate its hovering REMUS 100 for detection and classification of explosives attached to ship hulls underwater later this month at SPAWAR Systems Center located in San Diego, CA.
Unmanned Underwater Vehicle Localization refers to underwater hull inspections that utilize side-scanning sonar AUVs in detecting explosives on ship hulls, a mission which reduces the risk to divers and increases the Navy's effectiveness in neutralizing the threat from mines and other devices. The complex and varied shape of ships' hulls requires sophisticated navigation and vehicle controls systems and sensors that can accurately differentiate between normal hull-mounted equipment and limpet mines, a mission for which AUVs are uniquely suited.
“Hydroid is pleased to have been selected by the U.S. Navy to demonstrate the capabilities of our AUV in ship hull inspection as a practical and efficient method of mine detection,” said Christopher von Alt, president and one of the co-founders of Hydroid. “This contract provides us with the opportunity to further extend our longstanding relationship with NAVSEA through the increasingly important defensive missions our vehicles are capable of fulfilling.”
Hydroid's REMUS AUVs can be fitted with a number of different types of sensors and cameras and have been used to aid in hydrographic surveys, harbor security operations, debris field mapping and scientific sampling and mapping. Hydroid’s AUVs are currently being used by many navies around the world, including the U.S. Navy, British Royal Navy, Royal Australian Navy, Royal New Zealand Navy, Royal Norwegian Navy and German Navy.
