Specially Configured REMUS AUV Systems Added to Navy Inventory
(May, 2007 – Pocasset, MA) Hydroid, LLC, a leading manufacturer of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), announced today that NAVSEA, a branch of the United States Navy, has purchased four additional “Swordfish” systems, comprised of a total of 12 new custom-configured REMUS (Remote Environmental Measuring Units) AUVs. The vehicles are designed to meet the Navy’s stringent specifications, and include upgraded dual frequency side-scans in addition to the full range of features included with the NAVSEA’s earlier units.
Hydroid and NAVSEA signed a six-year contract in 2004 with a total ceiling of $32 million. In 2005, NAVSEA initially ordered two specially configured REMUS systems, named “Swordfish” that are comprised of three vehicles each built to Navy specifications. The “Swordfish” units are designed for Search-Classify-Map (SCM) by US Naval forces in conducting Very Shallow Water Mine Countermeasures (VSW MCM) operations. The custom configuration is capable of performing low-visibility VSW exploration and reconnaissance in support of amphibious landing, MCM operations and hydrographic mapping in the very shallow water zone.
“Orders for additional units show the high level of satisfaction with the “Swordfish” systems,” stated Hydroid president and cofounder, Christopher von Alt. “The modified configurations will lead to a higher level of functionality by increasing the unit’s efficiency and accuracy, while simultaneously decreasing the danger in the field.”
Hydroid's REMUS AUVs can be fitted with different types of sensors and cameras and have been used to aid in hydrographic surveys, harbor security operations, debris field mapping and scientific sampling and mapping. Hydroid’s AUVs are currently being used by many navies around the world, including the U.S. Navy, British Royal Navy, Royal New Zealand Navy and German Navy
