REMUS AUVs Assist in WHOI Oceanographic and Acoustics Studies
(May, 2007 – Pocasset, MA) Hydroid, LLC, a leading manufacturer of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), announced today that it has recently won a contract from one of the country’s foremost research organizations, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). The organization is using Hydroid’s popular REMUS (Remote Environmental Measuring Units) 100, the world’s most proven and reliable AUV, to conduct oceanographic field work.
Dedicated to research and higher education at the frontiers of ocean science, WHOI aims to develop and effectively communicate a fundamental understanding of how the oceans function and how they interact with the Earth as a whole. The REMUS 100 will be used by scientists within WHOI’s Ocean Acoustics Lab (OAL) for an Office of Naval Research project called AWACS (Acoustic Wide Area Coverage for Surveillance). For this project, the REMUS vehicle will be used to research Navy Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) and detect submerged mines. WHOI will also use the REMUS 100 to acoustically characterize ocean seabed and water column properties and study the behavioral patterns and effects of noise on marine mammals. The REMUS 100 was selected for these projects because of its reliability, ease of use and ability to accommodate various projects and goals.
“We are excited to join the growing WHOI community of REMUS vehicle users, and have high expectations for the benefits it will bring to our Ocean Acoustics Lab (OAL),” said Arthur Newhall, research specialist at WHOI. “We feel that the REMUS vehicles are ideal to support both active and passive acoustics work, and that performing acoustics from AUV’s will be a large part of our field’s future. These vehicles may change how oceanographic measurements will be performed in the future.”
“We’re delighted that the REMUS’s reliability and modularity have made it the AUV of choice for leading research institutes across the country,” said Christopher von Alt, president and one of the founders of Hydroid. “We are thrilled to be working with WHOI and look forward to supporting the organization on many future endeavors.”
Hydroid's REMUS AUVs can be fitted with a number of different types of sensors and cameras and have been used to aid in hydrographic surveys, harbor security operations, debris field mapping and scientific sampling and mapping. Hydroid’s AUVs are currently being used by many research facilities and navies around the world.
